学生习惯用:went down, made up for, caused…to, started to check, introduced——这些词不是错,但它们太笼统、太口语化,像一杯白开水。

Shares in ByteDance’s main competitor in China tumbled after the company’s losses widened.

The company’s shares fell 11.5 per cent, erasing as much as $14bn off Kuaishou’s market capitalisation.

Kuaishou’s short video app faces stiffening competition.

The earnings figures prompted Wall Street banks including Morgan Stanley to cut their share price targets.

Growth in the company’s advertising business helped offset the decline.

Regulators have also rolled out new rules to control livestreaming content.

The company’s results come as Beijing steps up scrutiny of the country’s tech sector.

Bernstein also pointed to Kuaishou’s ballooning sales-and-marketing expenses.

Shares…tumbled after the company’s losses widened(股价在亏损扩大后大幅下跌)

The stock price went down quickly. The stock price tumbled.
House prices fell sharply last year.House prices tumbled last year.

[Subject] tumbled [number%]

Tech stocks tumbled 8% after the government announced new regulations.

2. erase

原文: erasing as much as $14bn off Kuaishou’s market capitalisation(让市值蒸发多达140亿美元)

The company lost a lot of value. The crisis erased $2bn off the company’s market value.
The disaster took away years of progress. The disaster erased years of progress.

[Event] erased [amount] off [value/noun]

A single data breach erased the company’s entire quarterly profit.

3. offset — 抵消(不是make up for)

Growth in advertising business helped offset the decline(广告业务增长帮助抵消了这轮下滑)

The benefits made up for the costs. The benefits offset the costs.
His effort balanced the team’s weakness. His effort offset the team’s weakness.

[Factor A] offset [Factor B]

The new teaching method’s higher cost was offset by improved student outcomes.

4. prompt — 促使(不是cause…to)

The earnings figures prompted Wall Street banks to cut their share price targets(这些业绩数据促使华尔街银行下调了快手目标股价)

The test results made the school change its policy. The test results prompted the school to change its policy.
The report caused the government to act.The report prompted the government to act.

[Event] prompted [Entity] to [action]

Rising unemployment prompted the local government to launch a job-training program.

Regulators have also rolled out new rules to control livestreaming content(监管机构也出台了新规)

The government made new rules. The government rolled out new rules.
The school started a new program. The school rolled out a new program.

[Authority] rolled out [policy/program/rules]

The Ministry of Education rolled out a new curriculum for high schools across the country.

6. step up scrutiny —

Beijing steps up scrutiny of the country’s tech sector(中国政府正加强审查国内科技行业)

The government started to check online content more strictly. The government stepped up scrutiny of online content.
Schools must check safety more carefully.Schools must step up scrutiny of campus safety.

[Authority] stepped up scrutiny of [field/area]

After the scandal, the university stepped up scrutiny of its admissions process.

7. ballooning —

The company’s quickly increasing costs are worrying. The company’s ballooning costs are worrying.
The growing government debt has become a problem. The ballooning government debt has become a problem.

公式: ballooning [costs/expenses/debt/budget]

The city is struggling with ballooning housing prices that young people can no longer afford.

8. stiffening —

原文: faces stiffening competition(面临日益激烈的竞争)

The company had problems because its costs quickly increased. The government also started to check the tech sector more strictly. This situation made investors lose confidence. The benefits of new products could not make up for the losses.

The company struggled as its costs ballooned. Meanwhile, the government stepped up scrutiny of the tech sector. This situation prompted investors to lose confidence. The benefits of new products could not offset the losses.
