今天这篇 FT 文章讲的是中国美术学院的珠宝首饰设计专业——它本身就是一个绝佳语料库，藏着5个可以在任何作文里直接替换的”高级版”词汇。

This spring the usual 100,000 or so applicants vying for just 1,700 places at one of China’s most prestigious art colleges were not squeezing into vast halls for the gruelling four-day entrance exam… All the CAA’s courses, which include fine art, ceramics, architecture and fashion, are wildly oversubscribed and for those wishing to study jewellery, there are just 20 places on the undergraduate course and a handful for the masters degree.
The jewellery course also attracts international students from around the world… Its evolution reflects a desire to rediscover and celebrate traditional Chinese culture while building a bridge to the modern world and serving a soaring consumer market.
This includes teaching the enamelling technique of cloisonné as well as metal folding — both are practised by a dwindling number of craftspeople in the country… Some Chinese jewellers made strong work in the traditional way but brought it up to date.

1️⃣ vying for → 替代 competing for / trying to get
原文： 100,000 or so applicants vying for just 1,700 places
为什么好： compete for 是”竞争”，try to get 是”试图得到”——都不够精准。Vie for 带有一种”多个对手同时争夺同一目标”的动态感，而且非常正式，适合任何议论文。

为什么好： Very popular 太笼统。Oversubscribed 是”超额申请”的专业表达，前面加 wildly（极其）强调程度，组合起来就是”抢破头”的感觉。这个表达在写教育类、工作类话题时是杀手锏。

为什么好： Fewer and fewer 口语化，在书面作文里显得不够正式。Decreasing 虽然正确但平淡。Dwindling 暗示”逐渐减少到快要消失”——有情感色彩，比前两个生动得多。

为什么好： Growing fast / increasing quickly 可以，但不够有力。Soaring 像”一飞冲天”——暗示速度快、幅度大，是雅思大作文描述趋势的最佳用词之一。

为什么好： Make it modern 很中式。Bring it up to date 是最地道的英语表达——“让它跟上时代”。这是一个非常实用的 phrasal verb，适用场景极广。

这5个表达的共同特点：都不是生僻词，只是你没习惯用它们。
Vying for、soaring、dwindling 在英文外刊里出现频率极高，但在中国学生的作文里几乎看不到。为什么呢？因为教材和模拟题里的范文用词太”安全”了。
