Netflix added 4 million subscribers. This was a big slowdown compared to last year. The company is a streaming giant. It has 208 million customers worldwide.

Netflix added just 4m subscribers in the first quarter, a sharp slowdown from its pandemic-driven gains last year.

Netflix shares opened sharply lower on Wednesday after saying it added just 4m subscribers in the first quarter, a sharp slowdown from its pandemic-driven gains last year as the US began to emerge from lockdown.

At the end of March, the streaming giant had 208m customers globally, it said on Tuesday, falling short of its own guidance for 210m.

Netflix predicted that growth would heat up in the second half of the year with the return of hit shows such as Sex Education and The Witcher.

A crucial question for investors has been whether Netflix can maintain its lead over the competition, which includes streaming services from Apple and AT&T as well as Disney, and keep up momentum as consumers seek entertainment outside their homes again.

Reed Hastings, Netflix chief executive, told shareholders it did not believe competition was a “material factor” in the disappointing first-quarter subscriber numbers.

(Clause-Level Appositive)

FT原文

Netflix added just 4m subscribers in the first quarter, a sharp slowdown from its pandemic-driven gains last year.

Netflix added 4 million subscribers in the first quarter. It was a sharp slowdown compared to last year.

[Full Clause], [a/an/the + noun phrase that renames or summarizes the entire clause]

模板说明:末尾同位语的名词必须是对前面整句话的概括/评价,常见词有 a shift / a change / a move / a decision / a slowdown / an increase / a decline 等。

例句

  • The company closed 200 stores nationwide, a move that surprised industry analysts and triggered a sharp drop in its stock price.
  • Last year, China planted 10 million trees in the Gobi Desert, an effort widely recognized as a milestone in desertification control.
  • The university admitted 30% more international students this year, a sharp increase driven by the new scholarship program.

(Appositive as Alternative Name)

FT原文

At the end of March, the streaming giant had 208m customers globally.

Netflix reported… Netflix expects…

[First mention: Company/Person Name]. [The/An + descriptive noun phrase identifying the entity’s nature], [verb + remaining clause]

模板说明:这个同位语通常出现在第二句开头,用一个概括性的名词短语(the streaming giant / the electric car maker / the tech firm)加上具体描述。

例句

  • Apple announced record quarterly revenue of $90 billion. The tech giant attributed the growth to strong iPhone and services sales.
  • ByteDance launched a new AI-powered education tool. The social media company said the tool has already attracted 10 million users.
  • KFC opened 1,000 new stores in China last year. The fast-food chain now operates in more than 1,500 Chinese cities.

(Parenthetical Example with “such as”)

FT原文

Netflix predicted that growth would heat up with the return of hit shows such as Sex Education and The Witcher.

Netflix predicted that growth would heat up in the second half of the year. For example, it plans to bring back hit shows like Sex Education and The Witcher.

  • Online learning platforms such as Coursera and edX have made higher education more accessible to students worldwide.

(Non-restrictive Relative Clause as Parenthetical)

FT原文

A crucial question has been whether Netflix can maintain its lead over the competition, which includes streaming services from Apple and AT&T as well as Disney, and keep up momentum as consumers seek entertainment outside their homes again.

A crucial question has been whether Netflix can maintain its lead over the competition and keep up momentum.

中间用 which includes...

The company reported a loss of $2 billion. This was the largest quarterly loss in its history. 升级版: ________________________________

Many big cities have introduced bike-sharing programs. For example, Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou all have them. 升级版: ________________________________

Alibaba is a giant in e-commerce and cloud computing. It announced plans to invest $5 billion in AI research. 升级版: ________________________________

  1. The company reported a loss of $2 billion, the largest quarterly loss in its history.
  2. Many big cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, have introduced bike-sharing programs.
  3. Alibaba, a giant in e-commerce and cloud computing, announced plans to invest $5 billion in AI research.

(或:A giant in e-commerce and cloud computing, Alibaba announced plans to invest $5 billion in AI research.)
