但中国学生写这类话题时,词汇和句式往往过于简单——永远是”many people died”、“the city was damaged”。
Survivors of a powerful earthquake in Haiti had more misery heaped on them overnight as Tropical Storm Grace doused them with heavy rain and hit them with high winds.
The magnitude 7.2 quake struck, killing at least 1,941 people, injuring almost 9,900 and destroying more than 37,000 houses.
A lot of the hospitals are completely overwhelmed and are still receiving new patients three days after the earthquake.
The disaster rekindled memories of the devastating 2010 earthquake.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry has vowed that his government would “increase our energies tenfold to bring assistance to the maximum number of victims possible”.
1️⃣ “had more misery heaped on them” — 被动叠加结构
结构分析:have sth done (to sb) 的被动形式,加上 heap misery on 这个固定搭配,意思是”苦难被层层叠加”。
2️⃣ “killing… injuring… destroying…” —
为什么高级:比”and killed… and injured…”
3️⃣ “completely overwhelmed” —
4️⃣ “rekindled memories” —
5️⃣ “has vowed that… would…”
